CNC Ballscrew Repair & Replacement

Backlash, lost motion or positional error? We rebuild the axis to spec.

Worn ballscrews eat surface finish, part accuracy and tool life. We assess, refurbish or replace the assembly, then re-check axis geometry so tolerances actually hold once the machine goes back to work.

Why customers pick up the phone

If your machine's doing this, call us

Ballscrew wear rarely appears overnight. Catch it early and you save the spindle and the linear rails too.

0330 622 2321 Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
  • Backlash showing on measured parts (checked part-to-part)
  • Positional or lost-motion error reported by the controller
  • Noisy, notchy or juddering axis movement
  • Surface finish dropped off with no other change
  • Ballbar report flagging linear or reversal error
  • Scrap rate climbing on one axis of travel
What's typically included

The shape of the work.

No two machines or sites are the same. Scope on the day is set by what we find. Use this as a guide, not a checklist.

  • On-site assessment of axis backlash, positioning and lost motion
  • Refurbishment or replacement of ballscrew assemblies and nuts
  • Linear rail and bearing checks on the same visit where relevant
  • Post-repair Renishaw ballbar test available to prove restored geometry

Common questions

What people ask us about Ballscrew Repairs.

Straight answers. If yours isn't here, ring us and we'll answer it in a minute.

Repair or replace? How do you decide?
Age, preload, nut condition and travel wear all feed in. If the screw itself is scored or the nut is past overhaul we replace. If the assembly is sound and only preload is off we can rebuild. We tell you honestly what we'd do on our own machine.
Which brands of ballscrew can you source?
THK, NSK, HIWIN, PMI and OEM equivalents. We match to the original spec on preload class and lead accuracy so the axis performs as intended.
Do you verify the geometry after a ballscrew job?
Yes. A Renishaw QC20 ballbar test is available bundled with the repair so you get a documented before-and-after. Aerospace and defence customers usually want that record for their audit file.
How long is a machine out for an axis rebuild?
Depends on the machine. A single axis on a VMC is often one to two days on site. A long lathe axis with covers and rails can be three. We plan the exchange around your production calendar.
